Surrey council has approved a $10.5 million contract with United Earth Contractors Corp. to widen 80 Avenue between 132 Street and King George Boulevard. This marks the final phase of a congestion relief initiative in Newton, aiming to enhance both traffic flow and pedestrian/cycling infrastructure along the major road network. The project involves expanding the road to four lanes from two, installing a new traffic signal at 134 Street, and laying down storm sewer infrastructure. Scheduled from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, construction is expected to wrap up by December 2025.

Previously, a similar $10 million contract was awarded for widening 80 Avenue from Scott Road to 128 Street. There are hopes for further enhancements, with the city suggesting 76 Avenue as a potential target for future improvements.
