Families in BC will soon benefit from fully integrated before- and after-school care on school grounds, saving time, money, and stress. This initiative repurposes existing school spaces and resources, eliminating the need for extra pickups and drop-offs.

Premier David Eby emphasized the challenge of balancing work and school hours, highlighting the new program’s convenience for parents. Starting this fall, three districts—Chilliwack, Nanaimo-Ladysmith, and Nechako Lakes—will offer care provided by school staff. This ensures kids stay in a known environment and parents benefit from a single drop-off and pickup point.

The program, supported by over $2 million in funding, will create approximately 180 new licensed child care spaces. Early childhood educators will deliver seamless care that aligns with school hours. The initiative will be evaluated for potential expansion to other districts. Affordability is a key focus for the province, with spaces meeting regional affordability benchmarks and potential fee reductions of up to $115 per child per month. Families may also qualify for the Affordable Child Care Benefit.
