The City of West Kelowna has opted out of certain provincial short-term rental regulations, allowing properties in tourist commercial zones to continue operating as short-term rentals without the requirement of being the host’s principal residence. This decision aims to preserve established vacation rental operations in locations like Barona Beach Resort and Boucherie Beach Cottages. However, rentals in residential zones must adhere to the principal residence rule. The city will enforce other provincial measures such as displaying licenses and removing non-compliant listings.

West Kelowna meets the criteria to opt out based on population and rental vacancy rates. Provincial regulations targeting operators with multiple properties will take effect in May 2024. Conversely, Kelowna has imposed stricter regulations, effectively banning short-term rentals in residential properties, raising concerns about tourism and local businesses.
