The City of Vancouver is seeking public feedback on transforming the area around City Hall into “Civic District.” This 8.65-acre area, bordered by Broadway, 12th Avenue, Cambie, and Yukon streets, will intersect with the new Broadway Subway Station and the existing Broadway-City Hall Canada Line Station.

Three design concepts are being presented, each featuring a mix of taller buildings and open spaces, including office, retail, cultural, and institutional structures, alongside an outdoor plaza north of the heritage City Hall building. The buildings could reach up to 338 feet in height, with various shapes and sizes proposed.

The new concepts show more flexibility in tower numbers, potentially removing the previous two-towers-per-block rule. Each concept includes towers along Yukon Street and a north-south linear plaza connecting West Broadway to the existing City Hall. This Civic District is envisioned as both a “second downtown” and a crucial part of the Broadway Plan.

Public input on these design concepts is open until July 14, 2024, and a final design will be chosen by November 2024. Rezoning for the north block is planned for 2025, and there is no set timeline for construction.
