As part of its latest housing supply orders, the BC government set a target for Surrey to build 27,256 homes by 2029.

This move is part of a broader initiative targeting 10 total cities, raising the total to 20 municipalities under these orders. Six-month updates show that the first 10 priority communities selected by the Province of British Columbia built over 4,000 new homes. However, progress from the first phase shows mixed results, with Victoria exceeding its target and Vancouver falling short.

The second phase includes 55,478 homes across 10 cities. Surrey’s target, second only to Vancouver’s 28,900 units, reflects its rapid growth and its expected status as BC’s most populous city by 2029. Targets for other cities include Kelowna (8,774 units), Chilliwack (4,594 units), and Nanaimo (4,703 units). The province also set smaller targets for Maple Ridge, North Vancouver, White Rock, Esquimalt, Central Saanich, and Sidney.

These targets are part of a five-year plan to address projected growth and housing needs. The targets focus on completed housing units rather than approvals, urging municipalities to fast-track development projects. Vancouver recently proposed a new plan to include applications in their target count, aiming for 83,000 home approvals over 10 years,
