Surrey City Council has approved the development of a five-kilometer extension of 72 Avenue, the largest transportation investment in the city’s history. The aim is to bridge a major gap in the east-west arterial road network. The extension will span from 152 Street to Highway 15, crossing the Serpentine River. The project involves significant road construction, including bridges over Bear Creek and the Serpentine River. Four design options were considered, with the council endorsing a baseline four-lane road design to accommodate future population growth until 2050.

The estimated cost is $138 million, primarily funded by the city’s revenue and development charges. The extension aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity between highways, with projected traffic volumes indicating the necessity for this expansion. If all goes according to plan, construction is expected to commence in 2028, with completion by 2030, complementing other ongoing road infrastructure projects in Surrey.
