The BC government is expanding affordable housing options in Burnaby with over 150 new rental homes. These units cater to Indigenous and non-Indigenous families, seniors, and people with disabilities. Construction is progressing on 130 units at 6488 Byrnepark Dr., offering a mix of studio to three-bedroom apartments. Another 25 units will be made available at 7898-18 Ave. Rent options will vary, including income-based rates where tenants pay 30% of their income, standard market rates, and subsidized rates for those receiving income assistance. Completion of construction is anticipated by 2026.

M’akola Housing Society and The New Vista Society will manage the buildings, which feature amenities like underground parking, playgrounds, and community spaces. Additionally, essential upgrades to existing housing complexes, New Vista Place and Ernest Winch Tower, will extend their lifespan by 30 years, benefiting 348 independent seniors. These efforts are part of the government’s $19-billion housing investment. Since 2017, out of the 78,000 homes that have been delivered or planned in the province, over 3,500 were in Burnaby.
