The $310.6-million Newton Community Centre, initially planned for a site on King George Boulevard, will now be built south of Newton Arena. Mayor Brenda Locke views it as a major milestone for Surrey, with completion expected by 2028, featuring amenities like a 50-meter pool, gym, childcare, library, and more. While some councilors prefer the original location, which has been sitting vacant and shovel-ready for almost two years, Surrey’s new council believes the new site better aligns with existing civic facilities.

However, concerns arise over the displacement of residents and community assets. The new site will replace city-owned houses and the community garden. The garden, known as The PLOT, fosters community engagement and provides fresh produce. Despite the pushback, residents remain hopeful for future opportunities and community engagement, acknowledging the inevitability of change in city spaces. The exact design of the new facility is pending, with construction slated to start in 2025.
