The redevelopment of Columbia Square Plaza is progressing with adjustments to its original proposal. Initially outlined to include up to 4,000 residential units in six to eight towers, office and retail spaces, along with community areas, revisions were made to meet the city’s housing policies. The recent recommendation by council directs staff to collaborate with developers to include 20% secured market rental units and childcare facilities.

However, there’s contention regarding the absence of affordable rental units. Councilors Nakagawa and Henderson express concerns about the proposal’s lack of affordable housing and community amenities, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach. Despite the approval of the motion, Mayor Johnstone emphasized that it does not mean council will approval the revised proposal, but it allows the staff to work collaboratively with the applicant.
