Approximately 60 protesters gathered outside Langford City Hall to oppose a 15.6% property tax hike, the largest from all 13 municipalities in the region this year. Despite the protest, council unanimously approved the hike to fund various services and projects, including hiring new RCMP officers and firefighters, subsidizing the YMCA aquatics facility, and covering rising costs due to inflation. The decision was controversial, with some criticizing the impact on vulnerable residents and others arguing it’s necessary for the city’s long-term financial stability.

Former mayor Stew Young condemned the increase, advocating for alternative revenue sources instead of burdening taxpayers. The tax hike follows a 12% increase last year and is part of a five-year plan projecting further rises. Despite the backlash, council defends the decision, citing Langford’s growth and service demands.
