Surrey’s King George Boulevard has been selected as one of Metro Vancouver’s initial Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes by the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation. This BRT system will offer high-frequency rapid transit service with dedicated bus lanes and rail-like stations. The BRT project will connect City Centre to White Rock, benefiting underserved areas like Newton and South Surrey. It aims to enhance connectivity to SkyTrain, including the future Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension.

Mayor Brenda Locke of Surrey highlighted the urgent need for improved transit options in light of high gas prices, a climate emergency, and growing traffic congestion. This addition is crucial for Surrey’s growth plans, with the corridor expected to serve an additional 133,000 residents and accommodate 42,000 new jobs. With transit ridership in Surrey rebounding faster than any other city in Metro Vancouver post-COVID-19, increased transit service is essential to sustain this growth and meet housing needs.
