Kamloops council approved sending proposed housing density-related zoning changes to a public hearing. The changes, prompted by new provincial legislation aimed at boosting housing supply, encompass a suite of amendments to Kamloops’ Official Community Plan and zoning bylaws.

These amendments include the designation of transit-oriented areas within 400 meters of key transit exchanges, such as Lansdowne, North Shore, and Thompson Rivers University. These zones would see increased residential density and building height minimums. Additionally, the revisions permit more housing units on residential lots, with the maximum number determined by factors like lot size, location, and availability of municipal services.

Some council members expressed reservations about the financial burden of necessary infrastructure upgrades to support increased density. Others questioned the level of community consultation and emphasized the need for provincial funding. Council ultimately voted 5-4 in favor of advancing the proposed changes to a public hearing. The upcoming public hearing scheduled for June 11. Details about the proposed changes can be found on the city’s website.
