Kamloops is planning two major community projects that could open doors by 2030: a performing arts centre and an arena multiplex. City Council unanimously approved the first three readings of two loan authorization bylaws, seeking voter approval to borrow up to $275 million for the Build Kamloops program. The Build Kamloops initiative aims to significantly enhance the city’s recreational and cultural amenities.

If voters agree, the funds will support the Kamloops Centre for the Arts and an arena multiplex with multiple ice rinks in the Dufferin neighbourhood. Smaller projects include a new seniors community center, set to open this fall.

Both projects will begin design work by 2025, with construction starting in 2026 and completion targeted by mid-2029. Voter approval is crucial for the $140 million for the arts centre and $125 million for the arena multiplex. The alternative approval process for borrowing is set for completion by September, avoiding conflict with the upcoming provincial election.

Future phases include an indoor field facility and an aquatic center, possibly requiring additional borrowing.
