The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure has acquired two properties in Saanich’s Uptown area for a transit-oriented development strategy. This involves building affordable housing and a purpose-built bus exchange near the Uptown shopping center. The properties, including one currently housing Budget Rent-a-Car, were purchased for over $9 million.

The development aims to create a vibrant, connected community with easy access to public transit and amenities. It aligns with both local and provincial development plans, promoting higher-density residential uses near transit hubs. This acquisition is part of the provincial government’s $394 million fund for transit-oriented development sites. It follows a similar acquisition near SkyTrain Moody Centre Station in Port Moody and precedes a potential redevelopment near SkyTrain Nanaimo Station in Vancouver. Plans for the Uptown development are in early stages but will integrate with nearby trails and offer commercial and public spaces.
