On June 27, the Government of BC announced new rebates for the installation of solar panels and battery energy storage systems. The rebates aim to promote renewable energy and will be available once the program officially launches later in July. Installations completed before the launch will not qualify.

Solar Panel Rebates

  • Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels
  • Rebate Amount: Up to $5,000
  • Calculation: $1,000 per kilowatt (kW) of installed generator capacity
  • Cap: 50% of total installation cost, including labour and materials

Battery Storage Rebates

  • Battery energy storage systems
  • Rebate Amount: Up to $5,000
  • Calculation: $500 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of installed storage capacity
  • Cap: 50% of total installation cost, including labour and materials
  • Minimum Storage Size: 5 kWh

Full eligibility details and application procedures will be available later this month. Qualified contractors can be found through the Canadian Renewable Energy Association member directory or the BC Sustainable Energy directory. They will design and install the system, secure necessary permits, assist with applications, and provide estimates on savings and project payback.

Last month, the provincial government also launched an energy rebate, offering qualified applicants up to $16,000 in rebates to switch to high-efficiency heat pumps from oil, natural gas, or propane.
