According to a CMHC report, housing starts in Greater Victoria decreased by 16% in 2024, totalling 4,185, contrasting with a 2% national increase. Strict provincial policies and rising development costs are being blamed for the decline. Some areas, such as Esquimalt and Central Saanich, saw up to an 80% drop in starts.
